Chamberlain Professional Products introduces the new LA400 linear
gate operator from LiftMaster.
Chamberlain Professional Products introduces the new LA400 linear
gate operator from LiftMaster. This new linear gate operator is
the latest addition to the DC gate operator line available from
LiftMaster and is ideal for installers who need a product that
will work in a variety of applications, including residential,
rural, and solar. The powerful 24V DC motor is designed for exceptional
durability and will operate gates up to 15-feet wide and weighing
up to 550 pounds. In addition, an alarm-reset button has been
added to the outside of the control box. This button resets the
alarm in the event of a double-entrapment without having to remove
the cover. The LA400 also includes an on-board Chamberlain Security+®
radio receiver that has an external antenna, an external alarm
reset button, and an extended wiring kit on all dual gate operator
packages. The radio receiver is compatible with all LiftMaster
Garage Door Openers.
“The LA400 is an exciting new addition to our LiftMaster
line of DC gate operators” said Ken Roehl, vice president,
marketing, Chamberlain Professional Products. “It’s
durable and easier than other linear actuators to install, and
it’s a great value for the customer.” Installation
of the LA400 is quick and easy. It can be mounted to round or
square posts, steel or wood, and uses welded or bolted mounting
hardware. Wiring is also easier with color-coded circuit board
connections. Setting the limits is easy by pushing buttons on
the control board which eliminates the need to adjust or move
limit switches. The solar panel kit is available for installations
where the power source is not located near the gate. The LA400
comes with a convenient manual release that replaces the usual
pin to pull, and a battery back up system that will keep the unit
functioning up to100 cycles in the event of a power outage. In
addition, it has input/output terminals for accessories including
loops and photo eyes. It meets UL325 requirements, is UL listed
and is available in single or dual gate operator packages.

New Gate Standard
Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction
ASTM F2200-02 was adopted by ASTM in July and was published September,
2002. This new standard fills the void between the UL 325 gate
operator standard and the vehicular gate itself. While UL 325
required gate operator manufacturers to include instructional
statements in their manuals, there was no design or construction
standard that the gate and fence fabricators and installers could
refer to. This document closes that gap.
ASTM standards are available from ASTM Customer
Service (phone: 610/832-9585; service@astm.org; or www.astm.org

Texas Drops Licensing Requirements for Installers of Garage Door
and Gate Operators
On June 18, 2005, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed HB 3140, thus
removing the unintended licensing requirements for installers
of electronic access control devices contained in provisions of
Chapter 1702 of the Texas Occupations Code. A coalition of affected
industries strongly supported and worked for passage of this bill.
The law, originally scheduled to take effect in Texas on Jan.
1, 2005, had required the licensing of companies and installers
of gate operators, garage door openers, and other electronic access
control device systems. The law had potential wide-reaching negative
effects on these industries. Other states had already inquired
about using the new Texas law as a model. However, in December
2004, after a focused effort by several industries working together,
Texas ordered a temporary halt to enforcing that law. Now, with
the signing of HB 3140, the Texas legislature has officially amended
the Texas Occupation Code to provide an exemption from state private
security regulation for manufacturers, distributors, and installers
of electronic access control devices. This includes operators
for residential or commercial garage doors or gates and other
specific components and accessories. Reason: These parties typically
do not install alarm systems or external monitoring systems or
any other activities that are regulated by Chapter 1702. HB 3140
takes effect immediately. Thus, companies and installers in Texas
– and potentially elsewhere – have been saved from
costly and unnecessary licensing and registration requirements.
The industry coalition that supported HB 3140 included the International
Door Association (IDA), the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers
Association (DASMA), the American Association of Automatic Door
Manufacturers (AAADM), and the American Fence Association (AFA).
