A Thanksgiving Letter from Jeff Goodwin to His Partners and Employees

Southwest automated thanksgiving letter from jeff goodwin

Thanksgiving is a time to look back, remember and reflect on everything from the previous year. We wanted to share with you a Thanksgiving letter from Jeff Goodwin to his partners and employees. At Southwest Automated Security, we have so much to be thankful for. Please take the time to read this Thanksgiving letter and think about the things you are grateful for during Thanksgiving 2020.

A Thanksgiving Letter from Jeff Goodwin

Hello to everyone who comes across this letter,

This year has been one of the most challenging years we’ve faced as a company. There is so much to be thankful for and so much to look back on as we look forward to the bright future at SAS.

The first thing I’m thankful for is my best friend of 28 years, my wife, Debra. She is my soul mate and my life, and I wouldn’t be here without her.

As we have endured all of life’s lessons before and during the pandemic in 2020, we have so many reasons to give thanks during Thanksgiving. As an employee owned business, part of this letter is a dedicated thank you letter to employees for hard work. Thank you to the employees here at SAS. Without the mentorship, the determination to persevere and the dedication to being a proactive customer service-focused team, we wouldn’t be in today’s position. I have grown to know all of you not only as teammates but also as a family. This Thanksgiving letter is for everyone at Southwest Automated Security who finds joy in their work and takes this opportunity to make every day better than the last.

I would also like to dedicate this Thanksgiving letter to our partners. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to wake up every day doing the thing that we love. You allow us to make a difference in people’s lives with high-quality electronic security products. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to work with you, and I know the team at SAS loves every second of their day because they know they’re making a difference in your life. Thank you for being with us through these difficult times and I can’t express how excited the team and I are to see how our partnership grows for years to come.

It goes without saying how grateful the team and I are for all of our security vendors. Thank you so much for trusting us to supply our trusted partners with your high-quality products. We are so thankful to represent your brand every day and help others find solutions through your products. Thank you for trusting Southwest Automated Security with your security solutions, and we can’t wait to see where we’ll be with you by this time next year.

Last but not least, I would like to thank all of the first responders, front line workers and the men and women who have dedicated their lives to save others during the pandemic. Your sacrifice reminds all of us about how precious our lives are, and you inspire us to be thankful for the abilities we have to make a positive impact on our community. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.

To my immediate family, extended family at SAS, our trusted partners, our vendors and the men and women serving their community, thank you for everything. I hope you have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving.

Best,

Jeff Goodwin

Celebrating National Employee Ownership Month at Southwest Automated Security

Access Control Systems That Keep Your Workplace Safe & Healthy

October is National Employee Ownership Month, and we took a second to sit down and talk to a few of our team members about what it means to be an owner of a company. Here are some of the reasons why employees love sharing ownership at Southwest Automated Security, and what Employee Ownership Month means to them:

1. What does National Employee Ownership Month mean to you?

“National Employee Ownership Month means opportunity. We all have the opportunity to have a very significant impact at SAS. The more I do, the better it is for the company, but also, and most importantly, the better it will be for myself and my fellow employee-owners. I like to think about it as a rent to own situation. You are putting all of your time, efforts, etc. into something you are going to highly benefit from in the end. And that’s what ESOP month means to all of us.” – Javier Delgado

2. How do you teach employees to think like owners?

“We show them the difference between being a producer vs. consumer.  We also help them to understand how all the dollars make sense.  People tend to take care of things they own.  Sharing the vision and mission of the company with the team and letting them give feedback and have an active part in being a contributing factor of the decisions and directions of the business.” – Marsha’ Lee

3. What culture does employee ownership create?

“It creates a family atmosphere. We all have each other’s best interests at heart since it is also our best interest. It’s also family-oriented since an ESOP plan naturally motivates you to stay long term, you can get the very best out of it. It seems like most people here are in it for the long haul because of that. I’ve met some of my closest friends here at this company that feel the same way I do, which again just seems to hammer home even more that it’s a family atmosphere.” – Paul Westerdahl

4. What advantages do employees and partners have because of employee ownership?

“Employees and partners alike see the pride we take in doing our jobs as effectively as possible. Partners see we are here for them because they are the ones that allow us to have success. We are here to help take them to the next level, which in turn takes us to the next level. Employees, among so many other things, benefit from employee ownership by means of a retirement plan. Most younger people never consider saving money for retirement. It’s something way off in the future that they can’t even begin to think about. This retirement plan builds money for retirement without any of us having to give it a second thought and that’s pretty dang amazing!” – Daniel Andermann

5. What does employee ownership month mean for SAS and how are you celebrating?

“I feel like employee ownership month is just a great way for fellow employees to get to know each other, especially for SAS, having branches in several different states. We celebrate National Employee Ownership Month as a company by doing fun events and involving our customers and family.” – Patrick Mersch

We’re so excited to celebrate National Employee Ownership Month by serving our customers and spending quality time with each other. As we move into the final quarter of 2020, we’re looking forward to seeing our company grow, develop and better serve our team and customers. How to Start a Security Installation Business

How to Start a Security Installation Business

Starting your own security installation business comes with a lot of perks, but it won’t be as simple as opening up your shop. There is a lot of planning, preparation and analysis involved with starting your own business. Luckily for you, the team at Southwest Automated Security is here to help you become one of the most sought after security installers in your area. Here is how we suggest starting your security business:

Common Problems with Small Businesses

Whether you’re focusing on selling CCTV security systems or you want to be a commercial security installation specialist, you have to keep in mind that nearly 70% of small businesses fail within their first ten years. We have found that the most common issues with small businesses are that they fall short in finding a high demand location, have poor management and experience problems with cash flow.

Before you open up your doors, make sure your community has a demand for the products you want to offer. This will require doing some research, as well as calling local businesses and asking them about their security preferences. Management requires a self-evaluation of your skillset. Things to ask yourself would be, “Have I managed a team before?”, “How did I face the challenges with my team?” and “What was my management result?”

Lastly, but most importantly, you have to have a stable cash flow for your business. One-third of companies fail because their costs become more significant than their revenue. In order to combat these issues, you need to find a way to minimize the time between purchasing inventory, installing equipment and getting paid for the project. This requires a lot of thorough planning, along with keeping clear and transparent communication with your team and customers.

Obtaining a License and Registering

After you’ve found a need in your community for security installation and you’ve developed a plan to manage your team while maintaining a healthy cash flow effectively, your next step is to obtain the correct licensing for your industry. From access control security systems to swing gate operator installations, you will need to have the right licensing and paperwork in order to operate within your state and under the federal government. You can view license requirements here.

Registering the name of your business, along with obtaining insurance, would come next. When you register your business, you establish a formal business name, create a business structure and obtain a federal tax identification number. To find out more about establishing and registering your company name, click here. If you need to find more information about a  business structure, click here.

Insurance is one of the most important pieces when you start your business. You want to be covered at all times for any situation that might affect your company’s health. Insurance will help you protect your team from injuries, unforeseen damages to the client’s assets and any other mishaps. For more information, check the laws and requirements in your area regarding insurance for security installation companies.

Security Installation and Distribution Partners

Now that you have everything from cash flow to licensing figured out, all that’s left to answer is how to set up a security company. Security system vendors will likely work with distributors to sell their products. It’s improbable that manufacturers will sell products directly from their website, so you will need to find a licensed distributor to help you find the right products for your business.

At Southwest Automated Security, we have been a trusted security installation distributor throughout the United States. We work with our dealers to find the perfect electronic security solutions for their business model. On top of that, we have exclusive deals and discounts for all of our electronic security dealers every month! Find out more information about becoming a trusted Southwest Automated Security dealer and the benefits of partnering with us.

Creating a security installation business is a lot of work, but partnering with us can make your life a lot easier. We pride ourselves on having a creative, proactive and customer service focused team. The SAS team is eager to help you with any questions or concerns you may have about starting your own business or finding a trusted electronic security distributor. Contact our team today to find out more information about what we can offer you.
